Knowing the Unknown – Sarah’s Story

Sarah Doak
YouthLink Diversion Team Lead

“I love seeing youth become comfortable enough in the program center for them to realize this is really THEIR space. And then, I really love when they want to help care for the space, whether it’s helping with cleaning up after meals, landscaping, or assisting Ms. Lynn Helene with bringing in donations.

Not just that, but they also care for other youth, and even staff. Once, on a really busy day in the program center, a new young adult was needing an intake. I was told the individual that I would be with them momentarily to complete that and give them a tour. At that moment, another young man, one we've known for a couple years now, overheard the conversation and stepped up to give the tour.

This was so lovely to me because he saw a need and took initiative, and he is able to give a tour of the program center from a unique perspective that I don't have. He is relatable to this new person, and he can give them their perspective of what it really feels like to step in there for the first time. I'm so thankful that we have not just staff and volunteers who work to make everyone feel welcomed, but seasoned youth too, who turn into leaders in our program center.” Sarah Doak, YouthLink Diversion Team Lead

Sarah’s reflection shows how youth are empowered at Outreach. They are willing to pick each other up and make sure their peers feel seen and known, especially when they notice a new face in the program center. Your support will allow Outreach to continue to walk alongside youth facing homelessness, ensuring that each individual is seen and known at our doors.
