For Many Outreach Youth, Homelessness Begins at 18

For many young people, turning eighteen is a milestone filled with excitement. It’s a moment that often represents independence, new opportunities, and the beginning of adulthood. Graduation is just around the corner, and the future feels full of possibility.

However, for some youth, that birthday marks something entirely different.

Outreach’s Director of Coaching, Kyle Williams recently shared, “One of the most common reasons that we see youth become homeless or unaccompanied is that they are kicked out of their home on their eighteenth birthday.”

Instead of celebrating, they are suddenly trying to figure out where they will sleep that night. Rather than preparing for college, they are navigating uncertainty, fear, and a loss of stability that no one should have to face alone; especially at eighteen.

Something we’ve seen in Outreach’s thirty years is that this is not a rare occurrence. It is something the team encounters regularly, especially during the second half of the school year when many students are nearing graduation. Behind each situation is a young person who is still expected to show up to class, complete assignments, and plan for their future all while trying to survive in the present.

ARCH Steps in When Someone Else Steps Out

When a student experiences homelessness, life does not slow down. School continues, expectations remain, and decisions about the future still need to be made. What changes is the level of support surrounding them.

ARCH, which stands for Advocacy, Relationship, and Coaching in High Schools, is designed to meet students exactly where they are, often within the walls of their own school, during one of the most uncertain times in their lives. When a referral is made, a coach connects with the student and begins building a relationship.

That first conversation is often the moment a student realizes they are not alone, and that someone is willing to walk alongside them through whatever comes next.

This work takes time, especially when a young person has experienced instability or uncertainty. That is why consistency is so important. Outreach coaches show up week after week, walking alongside students throughout the school year and often into the summer, helping them stay engaged and focused even when circumstances feel overwhelming.

Over time, those small, consistent moments begin to add up. They create a foundation that allows students to keep moving forward, even when the path is difficult.

The Power of Staying

We are proud to say that ARCH has consistently maintained a graduation rate of around 95%, with some years (like 2025), reaching 100%. These numbers are a reflection of what happens when a student is supported in a way that meets both their immediate needs and their long-term goals.

Behind every number is a story of perseverance. It is a student choosing to keep going when it would have been easier to stop. It is a coach choosing to stay, to advocate, and to believe in what is possible.

As the school year begins to wind down, those stories come to a moment of celebration.

An ARCH Graduation

For many ARCH students, graduation does not look the way it does for their peers. Some may not have family members attending their ceremony. Others may not have the opportunity to celebrate in a traditional way. For students who have been navigating homelessness or instability, this milestone can feel both significant and uncertain.

That is why Outreach hosts the ARCH Graduation Celebration.

This event is intentionally designed to create a space where students can be fully seen and celebrated. It offers a moment to pause, reflect, and recognize everything they have accomplished. Students are honored individually, their journeys are acknowledged, and they are surrounded by a community that is there to support them.

A Special Gift

Each year, Outreach invites individuals to send in handwritten cards, notes of encouragement, and gift cards for graduating seniors. These cards are collected and given to students during the celebration, often filling backpacks with messages from people they may never meet but who have taken the time to recognize their achievement.

For a student who has faced uncertainty, a few words of encouragement can serve as a reminder that they are not alone, and that people believe in what comes next for them.

It is a simple act, but it has always carried lasting meaning to our graduates.
